Eagerly, Jem studied the photos, but they were even more of a letdown than the UK’s Most Wanted. The story included three photos of John R. Derry at different ages, and in none of them did he resemble Arthur Ajax. The most recent showed a smiling man with a dark mustache and salt-and-pepper hair sitting at a bistro table outdoors. He didn’t even look like Jem’s idea of a fraudster, much less an alien psychic. She thought he resembled somebody’s favorite history professor.

“So what exactly is an Annunaki, when it’s at home?” Pauley asked. “And you needn’t pretend you don’t know. Clarence isn’t the only one who tunes in to Ancient Aliens. You had it on last week.”

“Only for laughs,” Jem protested. “In history, the Annunaki were just another pantheon of ancient gods. Sumerian, in this case. Pretty much forgotten by the modern world. “Oh, yes, you absolutely watch only for laughs,” Pauley said. “That’s how you reeled that off without missing a beat. Stargazer.”

“Shut it.” Jem returned to the article.
